Paul’s companion Timothy knew the Hebrew Bible thoroughly, no doubt through the home-based instruction of his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois. (We may even question how literate they were, as Hellenic Jews, and how much else they learned by listening within the structure of their religious community.) What Timothy embodied, then, is a living faith and teaching.
Yet for all of Paul’s veneration of Holy Scripture, he sees its limitations. While it can lay a groundwork, only an experience Christ Jesus brings salvation.
